Why World Hydrography Day 2025 Matters for Maritime Safety
Every year on June 21st, the global maritime community marks World Hydrography Day – a vital moment to honour the science of hydrography and its role in making our oceans safer, more sustainable, and better understood.
For 2025, the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) has chosen the theme:
“Hydrographic Information – Enhancing Safety, Efficiency, and Sustainability in Marine Activities”
This focus highlights how essential accurate hydrographic data is – not only for navigation, but also for supporting climate resilience, improving maritime trade, and protecting marine ecosystems. At SpecTec, we proudly support these goals. Our mission to improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability through digital innovation is deeply aligned with the values of the hydrographic community.
What Is Hydrography, and Why Does It Matter?
Hydrography is the science of measuring and describing physical features of oceans, seas, rivers, and lakes. It’s the foundation of nautical charting and critical to safe marine navigation.
But its value extends even further. Hydrography also enables:
-
Safer shipping and efficient port operations through detailed seabed mapping
-
Environmental monitoring to protect marine biodiversity
-
Climate and disaster risk analysis, including tsunami preparedness
-
Development of offshore infrastructure like wind farms and pipelines
With 90% of global trade travelling by sea, hydrography supports nearly every aspect of the maritime world.
A Global Call to Action
Organisations like the IHO, NOAA, and the UK Hydrographic Society use World Hydrography Day to raise awareness and drive innovation. One major shift is the adoption of digital technologies that make maritime operations smarter and safer.
Examples include:
These initiatives support real-time decision-making, efficient operations, and improved safety at sea.
Driving Innovation with AMOS
At SpecTec, we’re inspired by the work of hydrographers. Like them, we believe that accurate, accessible data is the key to maritime safety and efficiency.
Our AMOS suite helps shipowners and operators:
-
Plan smarter voyages
-
Carry out preventative maintenance
-
Improve compliance and safety
-
Track environmental performance
-
Make informed, data-driven decisions—onboard and onshore
By embracing the digital transformation of the industry, we support the same values that underpin modern hydrography.
A Message from Our CEO
SpecTec CEO Adam Dennett shared his perspective on why World Hydrography Day is so important:
“I’ve only recently come into the maritime world, and one of the things that’s struck me most is how much of it depends on people we rarely see, like hydrographers. Their work literally shapes how the rest of us move through the sea. At SpecTec, we rely on good data every day to help our customers stay safe and efficient, but behind that data are experts measuring the seabed, mapping coastlines, and quietly making the ocean a safer place. I’ve got a lot of respect for that, and I think we all should.”
Join Us in Celebrating Hydrography
As World Hydrography Day 2025 approaches, SpecTec proudly honours the global hydrographic community and reaffirms our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and maritime safety.
We encourage all partners and peers to take part in this celebration – and to recognise how hydrographic data helps shape the future of our industry.
