My First Industry Experience: Attending SMM Hamburg 2024 with SpecTec

As someone new to the maritime industry, starting my journey with SpecTec has been both exciting and challenging.

One of the key moments in my early induction was being asked to attend the world’s largest maritime exhibition—SMM Hamburg. This global event, held bi-annually in Hamburg, Germany, draws professionals from across the maritime sector, and it gave me a unique opportunity to dive headfirst into the industry.

In this blog, I’ll share my experience attending SMM Hamburg, from understanding the market dynamics to meeting customers and colleagues, which together gave me a much clearer view of the industry I’m now part of.

What is SMM Hamburg?

SMM Hamburg is a massive, internationally recognized exhibition dedicated to the maritime industry. The event brings together companies, professionals, and innovators from across the globe to showcase the latest developments in shipbuilding, marine technology, and equipment.

Immersing in a New Industry.

Coming from a different industry background, I found SMM Hamburg incredibly insightful. The sheer scale of the event, combined with the variety of exhibitors, helped me gain a deeper understanding of the maritime sector.

It’s one thing to read about an industry, but witnessing the innovations firsthand and speaking directly with those who shape the industry was an invaluable experience. This hands-on exposure allowed me to quickly get up to speed on trends, which I can now incorporate into my role at SpecTec.

These face-to-face interactions were incredibly valuable in establishing a rapport, something that can be challenging when working in a global company.
